Recreation Director's Report 7/6/98
1. Move to Schlathaus is completed. I have installed my own phone and
Answering Machine. The Answering Machine is updated each week and lists the
events for the week. Also, my office hours will be Tuesday's from 5:30-7:3Opm
2. Concert Series is underway! First concert was Hearts Desire. Approx. 140
people were in attendance on the Hot night. Group was not overly impressive.
Started at 7:30pm (Supposed to have started at 7:00) Most of the crowd left when
they took a break. I recommend we do not have them return next year.
3. Roy C. Ketcham is unhappy with payment for the West Point Concert in April.
As of 7/1/98 they have not been paid yet. This is no fault of the Recreation
Commission, however, I would like to bring it to everyone's attention. This may
strain future relationships (ex-West Point Jazz Band rain site). Also, someone
from the Commission should address this with someone on the Town Board. It is
embarrassing to the Recreation Commission to tell performers that put on a show
for us that they are not getting paid right away! We might have trouble booking
groups next year over this matter.
4. Playgrounds opened on Monday June 29th. So far, there are no complaints. We
held a late registration Monday June 29th and Tuesday June 30th, I recommend that
next year late registration take place the Friday before camp starts (9am-2pm at
the Camp sites). The late registrations will start week 2 of camp. I felt it was too
busy Monday to hold a registration that evening. Camps have run smoothly the
first week. Average attendance for Week #1 was as follows:

RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES
JULY 6, 1998
NEXT MEETING AUGUST 3,1998 AT SCHLATHAUS PARK AT 7:00 P.M.
The regular meeting of the Town of Wappinger Recreation Commission was held July 6,
1998 at Schlathaus Park, All Angels Hill Road, Town of Wappinger Dutchess County New York.
The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chairman Ralph 1. Holt. Others present
were James Chappas, Joseph Ennesser, Ellen Korz and Joanne Vazquez.
The minutes of the June 1, 1998 meeting were approved on a motion by Mr. Ennesser
seconded by Mrs. Korz.
CORRESPONDENCE
A check was received from Patrick Moore, Esquire for $145.00 representing $77.50 on
behalf of restitution ofCorrad,o Illardi and $77.50 on behalf of restitution of John Tenaglia for
damages that took place on March 7, 1998 at Airport Park.
A letter was received from Dutchess County Planning regarding the 1996/1997 Castle
Point Recreation Handicap Improvement Project. This letter extends this grant to August 31 st.
We received a Summons with Notice from the Supreme Court of Dutchess County
regarding the lawsuit of Rosemary A. Williams. This is the girl that was hurt last year when she
fell off a rope that she was swinging on at Reese Park
A letter was received from the Hughsonville Fire District giving permission to use the
firehouse grounds for the Summer Recreation program. In their letter they also brought forth
several other items for our attention. The first being that the sliding board is in poor condition
and needs immediate repair and/or replacement. The second is that the jungle gym needs soft
landing area beneath (weather permitting) to complete job. And the last item of concern was
regarding the use of the six fire company tables. The letter stated that permission to use the tables
was not given by the Board as they do not control their use. They also noted that parking
regulations have to be observed as trucks exit both front and rear of the building when there is an
alarm.
A letter was received from Rita Andriella, Youth Director ofSt. Mary's's in Wappingers
requesting use of the volleyball courts on Thursday, July 23, 1998 from 6 - 8:00 p.m. She
understands that there is a fee which they will pay on approval of this request. It will be a one
shot deal. There was no problem with this request. They will be notified.

A certificate of insurance was received from the Hudson Valley Express for the use of
Robinson Lane on July 25th and 26th.
OUTGOING LETTERS
A letter was sent to Councilman Joseph Paoloni thanking him for his efforts in obtaining
14 computers for the senior center. A letter was also sent to cms Specialty Chemicals for the
donation. Another letter was sent to Janice Brickwod for donating a computer to the center.
The following received thank you letters for the donation of photo equipment to the photo
club: Dianne Wagner, Dorothy Cizek, Catherine Aldridge, and Mike Kloczkowicz for an
enlarger and lens.
Thank you letters were sent to the following for donations of raffle prizes for the 10th
Anniversary of the Senior Center: Clifford Seiferheld ofCapt'n Cliffs Seafood Market and Rest.,
John Weber of Shop Rite, Jack Barmello of Holiday Hoe Bowl, Gloria Gilman of Leprechaun
Tours, and Richard Silinsky of Wappinger Liquor.
A thank you letter was sent to Jay Paggi and Michael Tremper for their donations towards
the Senior's 10th Anniversary Picnic.
A thank you letter was sent to Attorney, Shari Hubner for speaking on proxies, power of
attorneys and living wills.
The following are letters which were sent to the Town Board for action at the June 22nd
Town Board Meeting and were approved:
1. Letter to increase petty cash to $200.00 from $100.00.
2. Letter to purchase a new mower deck for up to $3,500.
3. Requesting funds of $10,000 to increase garage space.
4. Letter requesting mileage for Mrs. Irvin and Mr. Lowery.
5. Letter requesting a P.O. for WCSD for bus transportation charges for summer program
in the amount of $7,500.
6. Letter requesting a P.O. for S. & S. Arts and Crafts for $2,800.
7. Letter requesting $5,000. for additional counselors
8. Letter requesting a P.O. in the amount of$12,489.00 for a new mower.
9. Letter requesting the appointment of Joanne Vazquez to Commission.

SENIOR CITIZEN REPORT.
Mrs. DeLisa was unable to attend.the meeting but she sent a report on the Senior's
activities for the month of July. The report is attached to these minutes.
RECREATION DIRECTOR'S REPORT.
Mr. Lowery was unable to attend this meeting but sent a report. He has completed his
move and his office has been set up at Schlathaus Park. He has installed his own phone and
answering machine and will be in the office on Tuesday nights from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m..
The concert series is under way and the crowds have been great.
The playgrounds opened on Monday, June 29th and so far there are no complaints. The
numbers at the camps are really significant. We finally got a swim director. We were actually
two days away from the start and we still were looking. Mr. Holt mentioned that we have to be
competitive in our salaries. Mrs. Korz mentioned that if a kid can be a lifeguard for $9.00 why
would he work for us teaching swimming to children for less. Mr. Holt mentioned that he
reviewed the salaries for all the programs and is working on a salary plan.
Radio City Music Hall Christmas Show sign ups are underway. The date is Sunday,
November 15th at 3 :30 p.m. show time. The bus will leave Town Hall at 9:30 which will leave
plenty oftime for shopping and lunch in the city. The cost is $29.50 per person.
The trip to Mohegan Sun Casino is scheduled for Sunday, October 18th at 8 a.m. to 7
p.m. The cost for the trip will be $10.00 and include bus transportation and $5.00 food voucher.
Date has not been set for sign up.
The Yankee Trip for August 29th is filled and the Saratoga Raceway trip for August 13th
has a few spots left.
Future trips will include a N.J. Nets Basketball game in January 1999 and a NCAA
College Basketball tournament game in Albany, N.Y. in March.
Mr. Lowery mentioned that he would like to publish a recreation guide for next year with
a release date of mid February and would like to have budget considerations for this.
He is drafting a letter to Sloper Willen to thank them for all of their help this summer in
training our staff in First Aid and CPR.

ROCKINGHAMfAIRPORT/ SOCCER
Mr. Holt mentioned that there have been some problems with soccer games being
scheduled at Rockingham and that there have been at least 2 accidents on Regency Drive in recent
weeks. Earlier in the year they attended a meeting and were concerned about the wet fields at
Airport Park and the deal that we made was that they would schedule some games over there but
it seems that they have scheduled a lot of games there and the residents have been complaining to
the Supervisor. She would like us to speak with the soccer officials regarding this.
DOCKS
Mr. Ennesser mentioned that the new docks are in and the hook up to the wall has been
completed. The insurance documents and all of the necessary paperwork has been completed.
He mentioned that the undulation between the two docks is not correct and he has contacted the
company to look at it. He mentioned that it is getting a lot of use. He said that there is a lot of
activity at the docks.
GRANTFORSCHLATHAUS
Mr. Ennesser mentioned that he has met with Mr. Paggi regarding the grant for
Schlathaus. We have $21,000. grant and Mr. Ennesser mentioned tat he has gotten estimates for
changing the ramp, redoing the bathroom, changing the doors etc. Mr. Ennesser mentioned that
he has talked to the Dutchess County Planning Dept. and he found out that approximately 33%
of the grant money goes to labor. Mr. Ennesser mentioned that now that Mr. Lowery has his
office at Schlathaus that maybe we should install a light outside. He mentioned that he would
contact Bob Smith of Chris Bar Electric to get some quotes on installing the lights. We will look
into putting in a light at the end of the driveway. It was also suggested that we put a light in the
middle of the driveway but we should make sure it won't be distrubed when we do the final
blacktop work for parking. Mr. Holt noted that when we had the late sign ups at Schlathaus last
week that many people did not know where to go and a lot thought it was a private residence.
Mr. Ennesser said that we should put a sign saying Recreation Park Office.
GREENWAY
A $6,250. Grant for Reese Park Greenway has been approved. Mr.Ennesser asked
permission to use the Schlathaus House for their meetings on the first Thursday of each month.
This request was approved but it was noted that no one was to be given keys. Mr. Ennesser or
the maintenance personnel will see that the house is opened.

MID HUDSON ROAD RUNNER RACE
Mr. Ennesser mentioned that he has spoken with Irv Miller regarding the date for their
race in September and noted that the weekend of the 20th has been set for the race. A letter will
be forwarded to us shortly.
REESE PARK.
Mr. Ennesser mentioned that there has been a lot of vandalism at Reese Park and he said
that he has given some keys to the Village Police Dept and to the Town Patrol to the gate so that
they can get inside to patrol the area.
CHIPPER
Mr. Holt mentioned that we have the new chipper and hopefully in October time frame we
will be able to get in there to start clearing the area.
TENNIS
Mrs. Korz mentioned that she has spoken with Mr. Casowitz and he said that the
enrollment in the tennis program is lower this year than in the past. He mentioned that he will
combine some of the classes if needed. Mrs. Korz mentioned that there hasn't been too much
response to the Tennis Tournament to date and that maybe we will have to revamp the
structure of the tournament.
CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
Mr. Holt mentioned the following:
1. The ladies league at Castle Point has called to request some improvements to be made.
Next week we will be bringing in some clay to do the fields. We will also be York raking the
lower field. We will be moving the truck body over for the storage of their equipment and the
marking chalk and we will be painting the truck body. We are also planning on bringing a
bleacher from Robinson Lane for the fields. We also purchased a couple of home plates for the
fields.
2. We need Mr. Friedman to design an extension for the building at Montfort Road as we
have received an okay from the Town Board to use $10,000. for the construction of this building.
We will soon be receiving the new chipper and the new mower and will need space to put them.

3. Handicapped parking has not been done at Robinson Lane and Spook Hill to date.
There seems to be some discussion as to where they should be placed at Robinson Lane. Mr.
Ennesser mentioned that they should be placed by the building and will be accessible to the rest
rooms. Someone else had mentioned that the handicapped spots should be put over by the
monument. It was agreed that they be placed by the building instead of by the monument. We
will be putting them in soon as we are in the process of getting a P.O.
4. The paving at Rockingham has not been done to date. Mrs. Roe will be giving Mr.
Humeston a can to ten him that it must be done by the end of July or we will have to get someone
else to do the work.
5.. The summer picnic is being planned for Schlathaus Park on August 13th. We will be
having a meeting prior to this to review the plans. We will be asking for volunteer help. We are
hoping that Shop Rite will again help us. We are looking to Mrs Irvin and Mr. Lowery for a more
disciplined program.
6. We still have not heard anything on the curb cut for the Rymer Property. We are not in
a rush to get in there at the moment but we would like it in the fall.
7. We have a couple of signs that we purchased to be hooked on the existing signs at
Schlathaus Park with the e-mail address on and Supervisor Smith will not anow them to be placed
on the signs. She mentioned that they will make the signs larger than the 24 sq ft. and win not
conform to the zoning ordinances. It was suggested that when the present signs are not in full
that we place these signs on the existing tracts. When the signs are fun we will then have to take
them down.
8. Last week we held a late registration for the playgrounds at Schlathaus Park and
thanks goes to Sylvia Holt, Steve Lowery, Peggy Roe and Ralph Holt for working on this
registration on both Monday and Tuesday nights. We registered a lot of children on these dates.

JULY 1998 REPORT TO THE RECREATION COMMISSION
FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE 1998
SENIOR CITIZEN CENTER
June activities at the senior citizen center included the
regular schedule of arts/crafts, oil painting, photo club,
exercise, line dancing, bingo, puzzles, bridge, spanish
class, cards and games.
on the 11th over 140 seniors enjoyed a catered barbeque
and music by Johnny Dell as they celebrated the 10th
anniversary of the Town of Wappinger senior center. There
were over 25 raffle prizes donated by our local merchants,
great food, music, boccie, shuffleboard and fun. The Town
supervisor, connie smith spoke to the seniors as did Mr.
Holt. Mr. RUggierio and Mr. paoloni also attended the event
and spent time speaking to the seniors. NOW on to the next
decade!
on the 3rd of June, Attorney shari Hubner was at the
center to speak on Health proxys, Living Wills and power of
Attorneys and other issues of interest to the seniors.
On the 17th, we held our first "sound Off Day" at the
center. This was a request of a few seniors. A day when
they could speak out and give opinions on what they liked
and didn't like about the center program. Also an
opportunity to give suggestions on new programs, events etc.
This was very successful. There was positive input and
suggestions. They would like to have a "sound off" every 2
or 3 months.
on the 17th, the seniors held their second wheel of
Fortune Game using our new wheel made by our recreation
maintenance crew. "say Jack" and "Nanna White" hosted the
game. There were prizes for all the contestants. It was
lots of fun.. This will be added to our monthlY schedule.
Blood pressure was cancelled this month~ Our monthlY
birthday party was held on the 26th. We celebrated an 80th
birthday of a senior on the 16th.
The Trip to Mt. Haven, Milford, pa. was good. Many
seniors said they would like to go back there.
There are 194 seniors registered at the center and 237 on
the waiting list.
ITEMS TO BE NOTED:
1. The photo club has received numerous donations of
supplies and equipment for their darkroom. They are really
enjoying this opportunity.

July? So soon? Guess that means we should start off with
a Bang! The first day of July will be devoted to BANGO oops
I mean BINGO ! BANGO ! Well, read on to find out more of our
July events. It's hot and sunny what better thing to do
than to think up FUN-NY things to do. Read on to find out
more! Ready?
First on July 1st, we will begin at 11 a.m with
BINGO ! BANGO ! in celebration of 4th of July. Then please
note the CENTER IS CLOSED JULY 3rd and July 6th.
In the opening paragraph, I mentioned thinking up FUN-NY
things to do. 50 there will be a FUN-NY THINGS TO DO
CONTEST. Think of "fun-ny" things to do, write it on a
piece of paper and drop it in the FUN-NY THINGS TO DO box by
the sign in sheet on or before July 15th. On the 16th, the
winner will be announced. The winner will be the one who
has the most original, funny or fun thing to do. It should
be something that most of us can participate in, not too
complicated just fun. so jot yoU FUN-NY THING TO DO down.
Don't forget to sign your name. You may be the winner!
On the 22nd The Office of the Aging will be holding their
picnic for wappinger at 5chlathaus. The center will be

WHEEL OF FORTUNE!! There are repeated requests for this
fun game 50 I will continue to put this in our monthly
schedule. Thanks to everyone who has helped make this game a
success. The contestants, "Hi-Jack", our score keepers,
letter changers and all who have participated in putting
this together. We will play our third game of WHEEL on July
30th. We need new contestants! Let me know first come-
first contestants. will you be one of our winners? With a
bit more practice we'll be as good as pat and Vanna if not
better. Would anyone like to volunteer to be the HOST? Or
NANNA? SCOREKEEPER? LETTERCHANGER? Let me know. The more
activities we do, the more we could use your help. So let me
know if you want to be Host? a contestant? Nanna? Our third
WHEEL OF FORTUNE BEGINS JUly 30th. PRIZES FOR ALL

ANOTHER WISH CONTINUING TO BE GRANTED!
* REGARDING BIRTHDAYS!!!!! On the wish list, many of you
requested that a cake be bought each month for the party
instead of each birthday person bringing a cake. well, your
wish shall be granted. I will buy a cake for all of us to
celebrate the birthdays of the month. of course cakes are
always welcome. Another WISH CONTINUING TO BE GRANTED!!!!
Regarding the WISH LIST. please note many WISHES ARE
GRANTED! I will keep some copies by the sign in sheet (or
ask me)just in case you have a "wish". Just write it down
and put it on my desk. The feedback from those returned has
been very helpful, enlightening and in some cases
surprising. Thank you to all of you who have taken the time
and effort to do this and to speak up. Remember, you need
to tell me what you want or do not want. There are more
ideas I will continue to grant these as I can. More wishes
to come true in months to come.
SQUARE DANCING!! Some of you requested square dancing
lessons. I have contacted a professional teacher and

caller. If you are interested in this please let me know as
soon as possible. There may be a small fee for these
lessons <not sure yet) Lessons would be one and a half
hours, either Tues. in the morning or Thurs. afternoon.
This is great exercise for all while having fun too.
Anyone interested in scrabble, parchese, chess or
checkers? Let me know! There were requests for more
exercise. Anyone interested in a six week class in Belly
Dancing, square Dancing, self defense? There may be a cost
to these but let me know if interested. Before I can get
more exercise type classes, I must know how many of you are
interested in a specific type of class. There's lots more
and I will continue to put these ideas to you in the
upcoming newsletters. However, please If you have not
turned your wish list in or if you have more to say, pick up
a wish list by the sign in sheet.
The WALKING CLUB continues. .If you would like to join the
Walking Club start now! A chart is hanging on the door.
Just add your name and start walking. Six times around the
Town Hall is a mile. Just mark the number of times you walk
around, I will convert it to miles later. We do recommend
you walk with someone. Use the "BUDDY" system when
possible. walking is considered one of the best physical
exercises you can do for your health It can help reduce
blood pressure, regulate insulin for diabetics, k~ep your
heart healthier and so much more. Goal for 1998 Walkers:
To do 10 more miles this year than last year. If you are
just starting, you can make at least 10 miles your goal.
That is only 60 times around the building in a year or 5
time around a month. start now!

started for YOU to share your thoughts, drawings or
writings. So come on seniors! Let's see your "stuff."
In regard to paying dues, many of you are now paying your
dues on a yearly basis and for that your Treasurers thank
you. This makes bookkeeping much easier and efficient. Many
choose to do this as they cannot be at the center every week
and want to participate in our special events. Yearly dues
is $25.00. Many of you pay on a monthly basis and that too
makes it easier to keep track of. A few of you are NOT
current with dues, this may result in your paying full price
for the upcoming luncheons! Your Treasurer says that for
those paying dues by the month, July dues is $2.00. Those
on the waiting list are welcome to pay dues. This is
voluntary. This entitles you to join our "out of center"
